EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
