Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG Yet

The anticipation around the recent awards show has been intense, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio warned that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing implies that the team is likely building a faster-paced experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it sparked the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, player agency, and flexible progression—elements that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities you can achieve by choosing a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can anticipate a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
